People Line Up For ‘Green’ Bag By Famous Designer

LOS ANGELES — It’s a handbag that took the United Kingdom by storm and is quickly becoming the must-have fashion accessory in Hollywood. The bag with a message went on sale for the first time ever in the U.S. to huge crowds and long lines on Wednesday.

From rainy New York City to sunny Los Angeles, hundreds of earth-friendly fashionistas lined up for hours hoping to get their hands on the U.K.’s hottest fashion accessory.

A new canvas bag that has sold out in Europe is now on sale in limited quantities for the first time ever in the U.S.

The handbags were created by British designer Anya Hindmarch who teamed up with a non-profit “green” organization to encourage people to say no to plastic bags. Each year, up to one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide.”It’s about trying to reduce the number, to recycle and re-use. That’s the important thing,” said Hindmarch.”I think it’s a very positive message and it’s time we get rid of the plastic bag. We really have no use for it anymore. It’s just causing more damage than good,” said shopper Josh Demple. The bag is priced at $15, which is a steal compared to Hindmarch’s other handbags which cost hundreds of dollars. Some have criticized the designer for not using organic or recycled materials, but Hindmarch said it’s the message that counts and Hollywood A-listers seem to agree.”They know that if they wear them it does draw attention to it so they’ve been very supportive in that way so it’s been kind of heartwarming actually,” said Hindmarch. The limited-edition U.S. bags are white with blue letters and only 10,000 went on sale in the U.S. and Canada Wednesday at the Hindmarch Boutiques, Fred Segal and Ron Herman stores. Another 20,000 will be available in July at Whole Foods Markets on the East Coast.
